You can make a difference

Charles G. Finney was an American Presbyterian minister and leader in the Second Great Awakening in the United States. In one of his sermons, he told the story of a man who was so ill from the effects of alcoholism that for years he couldn’t leave his home. Out of gratitude for a neighbor who would bring him food, he decided to pray for his neighbor’s salvation, even though the man himself was not yet saved. This resulted in both men being saved and a spiritual revival which resulted in many more being saved. But the story gets even better.

After the man’s death, pastor Finney visited his widow who gave the pastor her husband’s journal. Finney discovered that her husband had listed the names of about 30 ministers, churches, and missionaries in his journal. Next to each of the entries were the dates and times he had prayed for these churches, missionaries, and pastors that they would receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and for spiritual revival. He had prayed for each church, minister, and missionary individually on different days with his hometown church being last.

As far as pastor Finney could tell, the dates listed in the book coincided with the times when revival had broken out in each place the man had prayed for. Interestingly, the revival had broken out in his hometown the very day that the man’s widow placed his journal in pastor Charles Finney’s hand.

We should all do likewise

What we can learn from this story is that one person who’s dedicated to serving the Lord can make a difference. No matter what your current circumstances happen to be, you can make a difference!

I encourage you to make your own list of every church, pastor, ministry, and missionary you know and pray for them one by one. Ask God to give them the wisdom to teach the word of God rightly. Ask God to bless the pastors, ministers, teachers, and missionaries who are doing the good work of God’s kingdom. Ask God to change the hearts and minds of the church leaders who are not rightly teaching the bible and ask that the Lord might mend their ways. Pray that revival breaks out in each place you pray for. And finally, please pray for me and my ministry.

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
James 5:16

God bless you as you do the good work of God’s kingdom,

I first professed my belief in Jesus as the Son of God and accepted Him as my Savior more than 40 years ago. Since that day, I’ve never doubted that Jesus is who He claims to be. However, that belief didn’t keep me from living my life on my own terms for several years, which resulted in repeating the same sins over and over. In 2013, I became determined to make Jesus the Lord of my life. It was then that the Holy Spirit gave me an insatiable appetite for God’s word. As I turned more and more of my life over to Jesus and cooperated with the Holy Spirit, He has helped me break free of the sins that once enslaved me. Since then, I’ve been strongly compelled to share God’s word and to warn others that we need to get ready because Jesus is coming soon.
